Your Leopard Gecko Care Guide – Provided by ProTanks

Leopard geckos are a popular choice for both beginner and experienced reptile keepers thanks to their low-maintenance requirements and docile nature. They are hardy, adaptable and thrive in a properly set-up environment. This guide covers the essential elements of leopard gecko care, including enclosure setup, heating and lighting, feeding, and general health management.

The Tank Setup

Tank Size: Our recommended minimum leopard gecko tank size is 60x45x30cm. Ideally the 90x45x30cm being a better long term tank, providing a suitable amount of space to explore, climb and burrow, overall providing a better environment for your leopard gecko.

Substrate: Bioactive mix with a clay-based soil blend- safe for digging and natural behaviours.

Decor: Includes multiple hides (warm, cool, humid), flat basking rocks, driftwood, and drought-tolerant live plants.

Bioactive Care

Microfauna: Springtails and isopods in the substrate help clean waste and aerate the soil.

Plant Care: Water sparingly; leopard geckos prefer drier conditions. Lighting helps plants thrive- leave on 10-12 hours per day.

Heating & Lighting

Warm Side: 31-33ºC (88-92ºF)

Cool Side: 21-25ºC (70-77ºF)

Night Temp: Can drop to 18ºC (65ºF)

Heating: Use an overhead heat bulb to place in or on top of the tank with a thermostat if needed.

UVB (Optional): Not required but can be beneficial- use a 5.0 T5 UVB if desired.

Feeding

Staple Insects: Crickets, Dubai roaches, black soldier fly larvae, mealworms.

Feeding Schedule: Juveniles eat daily, adults every other day.

Supplements: Calcium with D3, 2-3x a week, multivitamin 1x a week.

Water: Shallow water dish should always be available.

Maintenance Tips 🌱

  • Spot Clean waste and uneaten food daily if needed.
  • Mist the humid hide to help when they’re in shed.
  • Deep cleaning is not needed- bioactive setups self-balance over time.
  • Monitor temps with a digital thermometer or temperature gun.

Quick Tips

  • Handle gently and allow new geckos time to settle.
  • Always offer a humid hide for proper shedding.
  • Leopard geckos are ground dwellers- they don’t need tall tanks but love burrows and surface features.
